Old Beaver County Courthouse, Beaver, Utah
Beaver is the birthplace of two well-known, but very different, people: Philo T. Farnsworth and Butch Cassidy. Philo T. Farnsworth was the inventor of several critical electronic devices that made television possible, including the cathode ray tube. Butch Cassidy was a notorious western outlaw.
Beaver also has the distinction of being the first town in Utah to be electrified. A hydroelectric generation plant was constructed on the Beaver River early in the 20th century. The plant continues to provide a large part of Beaver's power requirements today.
The Tushar Mountains are a pretty range with a number of hiking and biking trails, campgrounds and small lakes. In winter there are skiing and snowmobiling opportunities. Though the Tushars exceed the height of the Wasatch Mountains in Northern Utah, they remain under appreciated and relatively uncrowded.
At 12,173 feet Delano Peak is the tallest point in the Tushar Mountains. This good day hike starts from Hwy. 153 about 1 mile past Elk Meadows Ski and Summer Resort (near Puffer Lake). The trail climbs 2-1/2 miles to the Skyline Trail, joins it and heads west. After about about 1/2 mile, you'll leave the developed trail and hike follow the ridge line northeast 1-1/2 miles to 11,985 foot Mt. Holly. From Mt. Holly, you'll climb along a ridge north 2 miles to Mt. Delano. Along the route, which is mostly above the timberline, you'll have great views out over southern Utah and the Tushar Range.
Beaver County is a great place to stay while enjoying the activities of southwestern Utah's Color County and the spectacular scenery of the national parks. Great Basin National Park is located approximately 120 miles to the northwest in a remote mountain range that snakes down the Utah-Nevada desert. By taking route 21 west of Beaver City, you can easily reach the Great Basin. With the 13,000 foot high Wheeler Peak, a small glacier, a large natural arch, and the deep limestone caverns of Lehman Caves, this is one of the most beautiful areas in the western United States.
